40 Days of Summer – Day 28

40 Days of Summer is a personal photographic project I do annually, capturing one photograph of my family life every day, for the duration of the project.

Day 28 – Wednesday, 18th January 2012 @ 9.34am

Captured - 3DS playing with the cousins

The story – The morning after sleep-over night with their cousins, there’s some serious 3DS playing going on. Our boys got a 3DS to share for Christmas, and i’m happy to say they aren’t on it all the time. It’s an occasional thing, which is exactly what I wanted it to be.

I really struggle with technology and how much of it my kids should know about and be exposed to.

I can’t believe how addicted little minds can get to games, and computers, and when I hunt my kids off whichever technology they happen to be using at the time, this is the time (out of everything in their little lives), they are more likely to throw a tantrum or argue with me. Technology-free days are common in our household, not that they go down well (especially with Beau).

But I am so determined that my kids will be occasional gamers, not full time gamers. In this day in age I find it’s hard to avoid having these things around. Iphones, and Ipad’s, and laptops ……. There’s such a fine line between letting them learn, and grow with technology and keeping it in perspective.

Our generation of kids are so technology savvy. I know my own kids are so savvy it’s ridiculous. They can navigate PC’s and Mac’s to do just about anything, and if you are not watching them every second they will google whatever they want just by walking over to the computer, and typing it in. Even Beau can spell well enough to type something into google, and he’s not even in kindergarten.I remember once finding that Dusty had googled ‘Vampires’ and luckily saw him before he went too far into the search. In fact, at Christmas time Dusty asked to if he could research what to buy me for Christmas on google. I know I shouldn’t have looked but in this order – this is what he googled… (yes, he did write these himself) 1. Womens costumes 2. Womens cameras 3. Womens lego. And, yes I laughed so hard when I read these!

But how can we expect them to NOT want to use technology when most of us are setting a shocking example? What do they see us doing all the time? Sitting on our phones, and computers, and facebooking, and messaging people…  And even if we as parents aren’t doing these things in front of them, they see  it from people down the street, and when they visit people’s houses. It is everywhere. But I am making a commitment to back off from these things around my kids. Their little minds need a rest from seeing it all the time. I guess it’s all about keeping things in perspective.

One thing I can guarantee, darling boys of mine, is that I will not have you sitting down playing on the computer all day long. Not now. Not ever. I’ll be telling you to get your backsides OUTSIDE to kick a soccer ball, or play cricket, or ride on your bikes – just like my Mum did when we were kids.

40 Days of Summer – Day 26

40 Days of Summer is a personal photographic project I do annually, capturing one photograph of my family life every day, for the duration of the project.

Day 26 – Tuesday, 17th January 2012 @ 8.49pm

Captured - As the boys had a movie night with their cousins, Will & Archie.

The story – My sister and her kids are visiting during the school holidays. Katie has three boys too. Will, Archer and Eli.

It is the most beautiful thing to see how they get along, and they are always beyond excited to see each other. When they see each other they run and hug for ages, and you can’t get the smiles off their little faces. They sit down and play lego, and run around outside like wild banshees. Today we decided they could stay up and have a movie night. We put the younger two kids, Eli and Mitch, to bed. Then the older kids settled down to watch Harry Potter, while eating potato chips. They wanted the lights off, and candles to set a ‘spooky’s atmosphere, so we happily obliged.

This image is grainy, is taken only by candlelight, but I love that cousins can do the simplest of things together and they are the BEST things.

40 Days of Summer 2012 – Day 25

40 Days of Summer is a personal photographic project I do annually, capturing one photograph of my family life every day, for the duration of the project.

Day 25 – Monday, 16th January 2012 @ 6.24pm

Captured - As Mitchy read a book before bed

The story – Tractor loving Mitch has little time for books that don’t contain large machines or cool animals. If I handed him a book with fairies or dolls in it, he would probably throw it across the room in protest.

And me, well I don’t care what he is reading about. I just love the way he sits his little feet out from under the book when he reads alone.

He has THE fattest feet i’ve ever seen on a child. They have pads on the tops of them, just like dogs and cats have on the bottom of their feet. So much chub. So much loveliness in those little feet.

He is such a solid little brute. Tall, built and very strong. He can swing on the monkey bar swing like tarzan and hold himself up for ages. My little man, I have a feeling your personality is going to match that tough little physique of yours.

40 Days of Summer – Day 24

40 Days of Summer is a personal photographic project I do annually, capturing one photograph of my family life every day, for the duration of the project.

Day 24 – Sunday, 15th January 2012 @ 7.23pm

Captured - During crazy dance time at the Stocks residence.

The story – It wouldn’t be real life if I didn’t capture crazy dance time at our place. IPOD on. Volume UP. Wicked moves. Lots of jumping, spinning and the most awesome hand motions. And it wouldn’t be real if I wasn’t in a shot – where do you think the kids learnt all their cool moves? Generally it starts with a bit of Florence & The Machine, then sometimes we go with a bit of Elton John… depends on the  mood, and the requests that come in from the kids… but it’s always fun, and there’s nothing like a dance to take away the crappy parts of the day and put a smile on your face. Just try to dance and frown at the same time…. that frown will soon turn upside down into either a giant dancing smile, or a “YEAH” face. Guaranteed.

Oh, this looks like an evening at our house! Except that your house in insanely clean!!

40 Days of Summer – Day 23

40 Days of Summer is a personal photographic project I do annually, capturing one photograph of my family life every day, for the duration of the project.

Day 23 – Saturday, 14th January 2012 @ 6.27pm

Captured - As the stormy afternoon came to an end we went puddle crazy.

The story – The sheer joy and exhilaration on the faces of our three boys is worth any amount of mess, of mud, of long showering and dirty washing.

There is nothing like letting your children go ‘free range’. A simple puddle can provide the same adrenalin hit as a roller coaster, or a ride at the show. But, the humble puddle is 100% free, and it’s right there in our backyard. I will never forget the bliss of playing in mud, and jumping in puddles as a kid. It’s one of life’s simple childhood pleasures. And, I happily admit that our children are free range A LOT.

Marsha - January 14, 2012 - 8:10 pm

I allow my kids to be ‘free range’ too and wouldn’t have it any other way! Bet you felt like joining in the fun yourself! This is one of my favourite shots of yours ever. Brillant!

Natalie Bice - January 15, 2012 - 8:06 am

Oh Jen this is just so fantastic. Love perfect shot of what it is to be a child.
